Sometimes I’ll set my nendos on my bookshelf and create funny, unintended photos. It seems as though something about Exelica is troubling Mayushii in this one.

“Haiiii!”

Lately I’ve been disappointed in my figure photography “skills”. I have a decent camera but still have much to learn about composition, lighting, etc. Especially lighting — I don’t even have lamps or diffuser boxes. Up until this point I’ve been relying on natural sunlight and whatever lighting the room I happen to be in provides.
I think I really started to rethink my commitment to figure photography after I took photos of my Mayushii nendo and uploaded them to deviantART and myfigurecollection.net. I saw just how much more professional-looking many of the photos were than mine. I don’t necessarily think I have to be the best, but I don’t like my work looking so sub-par.
Finally, a normal blog post.

My new Nikon D5000 arrived today. I had been feeling restricted with my compact Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS. It was a fine camera with which to take casual photos, and I’ll probably still use it for that purpose, but for figure review photos and even for ADLN, I wanted my photos to be crisper and less grainy in low light.

After reading glowing reviews of this model, which includes a tilt-and-swivel LCD monitor and sharp definition and color, I bought one along with an extra battery, camera bag, and other accessories. It sits above the lower-end, entry-level DSLR cameras while still being somewhat affordable. While not as popular as the D90, it will do everything I want.

I’ll use the 18-55mm kit lens for now, until I can get my hands on a fixed 50mm lens. If I could have swapped the kit lens with a 50mm lens, I would have being that a 50mm lens is considered a must-have by most photographers. I’ve heard of photographers who never take off their 50mm lense unless they have to use a telephoto lens for sporting events or a macro lens for extreme close-up shots.

I’ll upload photos after the battery is charged. I might even use this for today’s the next comic.
